Launching a new product is like giving birth
People are always saying to me “You should make XYZ” or “Have you ever thought
about making 123 ?”
I’m guessing it comes from a good place. Maybe it is something they would like to
see in my product line. Maybe it is something they want from a local handcrafted source.
These suggestions are always welcome, because A: I love to hear what my
customers are thinking. And 2: Some of their ideas are good.
However, launching a new product is so intense, I liken it to deciding to get
pregnant and have baby, minus the impending college tuition.
Here’s why:
1: New moms research the heck out of everything, so do handcrafters
2: We ask the same questions “Can I do this?” “Do I have the space?”
“Can I afford it?” “How will my other kids react?” (Yes, this is true…. think marketing and branding)
3: We groan at the thought of all the nights of lost sleep
4: We pick out names
5: We weigh the risk factors and have fears
6: Product launch is a creation you are charged to care for and nurture
7: The creation of a product comes from a deep stirring and drive from within,
like the sound your ovaries make when they want a baby
8: It is an investment and a commitment
9: We “carry” our products around to events and shows
10: It’s messy, disruptive, real. When done well, it can be one of the best things
to ever happen to you
On the plus side, there are no dirty diapers.
Peace, Kim

Fun post. Thanks for sharing.
What a great comparison! It sure is like giving birth!
I agree. The labor incurred when launching a new product is also pretty intense.
